Phototaxis

Reflections on light pollution resulted in the creation of a swarm of mayflies screen-printed from mayfly body imprints on silk using cyanobacteria and mayfly bodies gathered from lake Winnipeg. I discovered that by using a UV light, I could attract a live swarm to the piece and that it would allow me to experiment with cyanotype that is sensitive to UV rays. This allowed me to capture ghostly images of ephemeral moments of insects joining the swarm. The piece, despite detracting moths momentarily from their regular habits does so in a very minimal way and is meant to be a gentle interference inspiring response-ability from both the human and the insect. The final Phototaxis piece also includes screenprints of moth bodies with copper pigment and uses only Peace or Ahimsa silk which is harvested from moths that have emerged from their cocoons alive.

An outdoor art installation shot at night. A textured globe lit from the interior like a lamp post, sits atop a tall pole wrapped in white silk also lit from the interior. The layered silk is wider at the base than from where it falls at the globe and is slightly bunched as it spreads across the ground. The silk contains the prints of insects in blue-green colour.

A close up view of a textured back lit globe. The texture makes the light emitting from the globe slightly darker in some places than in others. There are insect cocoons embedded in the textured globe. The globe is sitting on a base and appears against a black background.

A series of 12 white framed cyanotype photographs are mounted on a white wall. The photos of varying compositions all feature the ghostly white outlines of moths and insects against an aqua blue, mildly patterned, background.
